The flight of the Hawk

Un rey recibió como obsequio dos pequeños halcones y se los entregó al maestro de cetrería para que los adiestrara.

A king received two small hawks as gifts and delivered them to the master of falconry to be trained.

Pasados unos mese, el maestro le informó al rey de que uno de los halcones estaba perfectamente, pero que al otro no sabía lo que le sucedía: no se había movido de la rama donde lo dejó desde el día en que llegó. El rey mandó llamar a curanderos y sanadores para que vieran al halcón, pero nadie pudo hacer volar al ave. Encargó entonces la misión a miembros de la corte, pero sin resultado. Al día siguiente, el monarca pudo observar desde la ventana que el ave aún seguía inmóvil.

Some months passed, the master informed the king that one of the hawks was perfect, but that he didn't know what happened to the other one: it didn't move from the branch it was put on since the day it arrived. The king summoned for a quack doctor and a healer to look at the hawk, but no one could make the bird fly. He then entrusted the mission to the members of the court, but without result. The following day, the monarch could see from his window that the bird was still immobile. 

Entonces decidió comunicar a su pueblo que ofrecería una recompensa a la persona que hiciera volar al halcón. A la mañana siguiente, vio al halcón volando ágilmente por los jardines. El rey ordenó:

So then he decided to tell his village that he will offer compensation to the person that can make the hawk fly. The following morning, he saw the hawk flying nimbly through his gardens. The king ordered,

- Traedme al autor de este milagro.

"Find the creator of this miracle for me."

Su corte rápidamente le presentó a un campesino. El rey le preguntó:

His court quickly present him with a peasant. The king asked him,

- ¿Tú hiciste volar al halcón? ¿Cómo le hiciste? ¿Eres mago?

" You made the hawk fly? How did you do it? Are you a magician?"

Intimidado el campesino le dijo al rey:

Intimidated, the peasant told the king,

- Fue fácil, mi rey. Sólo corté la rama, y el halcón voló. Se dio cuenta de que tenia alas y se echó a volar. 

"It was easy, my king. I only cut the branch and the hawk flew. It realized that it had wings and started to fly.

Cicatrices de Amor

Scars of Love

En un caluroso día de verano, un niño decidió ir a nadar en la laguna detrás de su casa. Salió corriendo por la puerta trasera, se tiró al agua y nadaba feliz. No se daba cuenta de que un cocodrilo se le acercaba.

During a hot day in summer, a boy decided to go swimming in the pond behind his house. Running out through the back door, he plunged into the water and swam happily. He didn't pay attention to a crocodile coming closer to him.

Su mamá, desde la casa, miraba por la ventana y vio con horror lo que sucedía. Enseguida corrió hacia su hijo gritándole lo más fuerte que podía. Oyéndola, el niño se alarmó y giró nadando hacia su mamá. Pero fue demasiado tardo.

From the house, his mother saw through the window and watched with horror what happened. Immediately, she ran to her child, screaming as loud as possible. Hearing her, the boy was alarmed and turned to swim towards his mother, but it was too late.

Desde el muelle, la mamá agarró al niño por sus brazos justo cuando el caimán le agarraba sus piernecitas. La mujer tiraba de los brazos del niño con todas sus fuerzas. El cocodrilo era más fuerte, pero la mamá era mucho más apasionada, y su amor no la abandonaba.

From the dock, the mother took hold of the boy by his arms just when the crocodile grabbed the boys legs. The mother pulled the arms of the boy with all her strength. The crocodile was stronger but the mother had more passion and her love would not abandon her child.

Un hombre que escuchó los gritos se apresuró hacia el lugar con una pistola y mató al cocodrilo.

A man that heard them yell came quickly to the place with a pistol and killed the crocodile.

El niño sobrevivió y, aunque sus piernas sufrieron bastante, aún pudo llegar a caminar.

The boy survived and, even though his legs were badly hurt, he was able to walk again.

Cuando salió del trauma, un periodista le preguntó al niño si quería enseñarle las cicatrices de sus pies. El niño levantó la colcha y se las mostró. Pero entonces, con gran orgullo, se remangó las mangas y, señalando hacia las cicatrices en sus brazos, le dijo:

When the trauma was over, a reporter asked the boy if he wanted to show his scars on his legs. The boy lifted up the bed sheet and showed them. But then, with pride, he rolled up his sleeves and pointed out the scars on his arms. He said, 

- Pero las que usted debe ver son éstas.

"But what you should see are these."

Eran las marcas de las uñas de su mamá, que habían presionado con fuerza en sus brazos.

It was the marks of his mother's nails that pressed with force into his arms.

- Las tengo porque mamá no me soltó y me salvó la vida.

"I have these because my mother didn't let go and saved my life."

Estrella Vespertina

Evening Star

Brota una estrella en las alturas. ¿Quién la dibujó? La estrella se ilumina y me anuncia que el día está por terminar.

A star appears in the skies. Who drew it? The star illuminates everything and tells me that the day is over.

El Sol guarda sus rayos para que la noche pinte el cielo.

The sun keeps its rays so that the night can paint the sky.

Saludo a la estrella, sonrío y me preparo para dormir.

I greet the star, smile and prepare myself for sleep.
